I’ve only gone and done it again, but this time on purpose. If you didn’t know you can put a water guard on a kayak over the hole which allows you to get into the boat. However, to get this awesome contraption (that I went three sessions without #angryface) onto your boat, you need to prove that you can get it off, so you don’t drown if you capsize. I needed to be able to do this since on a long journey I can’t afford to keep getting wet, and you don’t need to capsize to get wet; splashes from the paddle will do just fine.
So I volunteered for what they call a wet exit. What I had to do was purposefully capsize and then once under, tap hard on the boat three times so they can make sure I am entirely under and then find the handle to pull off the guard and hey presto I was out. Although, I didn’t actually capsize myself; I had to get the instructor to push me over because I knew that it would’ve taken me way too long to muster up the courage to do it myself. In hindsight, it was actually quite fun. Just something about the feel of freshwater soothes me.
Anyway, this was towards the end of the session, thank goodness, because obviously I was soaked through. However, we still made time to go down the Wyre.
I veered to the right so dramatically that I did what I wasn’t supposed to do and stopped paddling to use my paddle as a rudder and turn my boat back to the left. I have gone down this Wyre twice before and had people screaming at me to keep paddling and yet, I forgot to paddle!
Anyway, three sessions down and three capsizes later, and I am starting to get good at kayaking. I still get aches all over after every session though, and I can’t even imagine how my body would feel after a week of kayaking, but that won’t stop me; I have already completed 300 miles of walking how hard can 82 miles of kayaking be?
I am only kidding, I know it’s going to be hard but I wanted to boast about walking 300 miles, so it just had to be done.
